Kennel Club Assured Breeder Update

We have just recieved our latest copy of the kennel club Assured breeder news Update Feb 2012

Copy can be read here

There have been a number of health tests added to the scheme for certain breeds, in particular in recommends for Golden Retrievers:

Bitches under 18 months not to produce a litter and over 18 months only produce 1 litter per year.

One of the biggest changes to the Assured breeders scheme is that it now caters for Stud Dogs, Assured Breeders are expected to draw up a "Contract of Stud Service" for each service performed, which must include details and results of relevent health tests.

There is a headline "RSPCA campaign fails to address the real issues" the writer is certainly no fan of the RSPCA, because of its stance on hunting with dogs, but I do find my self criticising the Kennel Club again for using words like "misdirected" and fail to address.

The RSPCA have a very valid point "bred for looks, born to suffer" the kennel club cannot criticise others when there own back yard has not been cleaned up.

This organisation really does need outside help!

The whole issue smacks of hypocrisy and double standards, when Kennel Club Judges and Award Winners receive credit for breeding unhealthy dogs, the kennel club is complicit with its action by allowing the registration of pups, born from unhealthy dogs.

Pedigree Dogs 3 Years On BBC 4 9pm
Hopefully we will see a balanced argument, these program makers should be congratulated on challenging institutions/breeders that put profit before health...alot has change over 3 years, but the kennel club still run a two teir system and prefer change by education & negoiation, rather than enforcement!

One of Best Working Cocker Trainers in the South West

A gundog trainer can claim he has some of the best cocker spaniels in the UK after triumphing at an elite gundog competition.

Three of Nigel Partiss' cocker spaniels, Swift, Jack and Midge, qualified to compete in the Kennel Club's Cocker Spaniel Championship this year.

Swift was named third best cocker spaniel in the contest while Jack was awarded a diploma of merit.

Mr Partiss, 43, from Illminster, Somerset, explained that just 35 dogs from around the UK qualify to take part in the championship each year.

"They've got to compete throughout the shooting season and they've got to win so many trials," he said.

The competition, which is held on a different country estate each year, consists of a number of challenging tasks for the gundogs involving live game.

Mr Partiss, who lives in Ilminster, Somerset, explained that he originally started working with cocker spaniels as a hobby, but it gradually grew into a full-time job

UK Rankings for Gundog Websites February 2012

Some websites purport to have top rankings and heavy traffic when they don’t?

Teir rankings can be checked quite easy on alexa.com.

A popular website should not be taken as the ONLY indicator for good breeding, training, food or equipment, just the same as a top field trialing gundogs may not be the best of health or temperament, the web is excellent at giving you information to research and make informed decisions, which would be otherwise difficult to make!
